Built in GPS systems only work when the car is on. Portable GPS systems are battery operated and usually charged in the car’s cigarette lighter. Portable GPS’s are turned on and off independently of the car.

If connected into the cigarette lighter, it’ll come ON as you turn on the ignition.
When you stop the car, it’ll remain ON for a few minutes, then it’ll turn OFF.
If it is not powered by the car, and you press the GPS ON/OFF switch it’ll run from its internal battery for a few hours.
