Q&A: Is there a way to disable or uninstall the GPS chip that is tracking my financed car?
Question by Turkish_Dream:
Is there a way to disable or uninstall the GPS chip that is tracking my financed car?
i bought a car on financing in canada that has GPS that can actually shut off the car and track it wherever i go. i find this an invasion of privacy. I received a remote to enter codes (such as 999 9999 when the car turns off so I have 24 hours to move it..)
can i install this, anyway around this? i don’t like it.
thanks

Answer by Agent
No because it is used by law enforcement to find stolen cars and cannot be tampered with.
V Dude down there, All GPS are used to locate stolen vehicles, and you may void any warranty by tampering with the device. That is all I am saying.

The GPS is connected straight to your OBD2 connector that is located directly under the steering wheel. It looks like a plug for a nintendo. I know that you can disconnect it but as far as the vehicle running it just depends on how they wired it to your ECU / ignition system. Don’t listen to agent he is talking about lo jack. Not a financial institutions system to track down/recover their assets/vehicles.

If you have financed a car with a finance company the GPS device is hard wired into your vehicle. You have popbably signed a disclosure document advising you of the device being in your vehicle as well as indiating any tampering with the device can void your finance agreement with the lender.
When the device is disconnected ot tampered with the system managinhg the GPS device automatically notifies the lender and the lender then may well have the authority to “repossess” your vehicle due to that breach of the finance agreement.
Don’t be too concerned about privacy issues. Most lenders have many thousands of these devices deployed and simply do not have the time or inclination to “snoop” on the activities of any given individual. The only time your vehicle will be attended to is if you are late on a payment. Also, in all probability, if installed correctly, removing the device will result in your vehicle being unable to start
Unless you are up to no good regarding paying for your vehicle be assured the lender is oblivious to you in all ways. Even when collection personnel administer these devices they often do so in large batches based on account numbers, not names. Sorry to disappoint you but you, as an person, are simply not that interesting to any lender, unless you don’t pay.
