Question by VillenX:
GPS Tracking kills my car battery?
Why does my car battery drain, since I put in a Garmin GPS tracking system was installed?

You are talking about such a minor system drain from the GPS Tracker that there must be an issue with your battery or alternator. You can get a free diagnostic run at most parts stores such as Autozone.

maybe your battery was weak to begin with.
Autozone or pepboys or any auto parts store will test your battery for free.
might have been a coincidence or maybe your battery was already on its last leg.

Do you leave it on when the ignition is turned off?
It should be wired so it goes off when the ignition is off. If not, it was installed incorrectly.
If that’s not the problem, perhaps you have a weak battery?
Get it checked, and get the alternator checked.

it should not do that it may be time for a new battery for the car or just make sure that you unplug the unit when the car is not running. That Gps has an internal battery in it which will only need a couple of hours to charge and can run for at least 4 hours at a time.

There must be a problem with your electrical system, the gps shouldn’t drain ur battery

Take it to your dealer and ask them …maybe something is wrong with the battery or the Garman. IT shouldn’t do that.

The power use of a GPS is tiny.
It should be zero when its off.
You might have exposed a wire when it was fitted and be shorting out.

normally these devices pull little power and run on the alternator when the car is in motion. you have an electrical issue with your car. something is really wrong.
would go to a shop and have it diagnosed.

Either A get a new battery, or B unplug your system when you are not using it.

You always need to unplug all the extra electronic devises from your car when not in use, or it will drain your battery.

The installer needs to redo this installation correctly. The GPS doesn’t need to be powered when not in use. Which unit is this? The portable Nuvis don’t have to stay in the car, and it’s best to take something with you that is so attractive to thieves. If it is a permanent installation, it isn’t connected up right.

That is weird I don’t believe the problem is with the GPS draining the car battery because it takes up minor power. It might be an issue with your car battery in general I would suggest you go to a place such as Autozone or Costco to check that battery out.

Is your unit plugged into your cigaratte power source thing? If so you shoudln’t leave it plugged in when your car is off becasue it will drain your battery.

The parts of the charging system in a car are:
- Alternator
- Voltage Regulator
- Battery
Now, there is possibly a short between the GPS system and the body, or possibly the GPS system was installed improperly. Such as a hanging wire, or a wire that rubs onto metal (and the sheath around the wire can be worn out).
Perhaps you should mention which model you have it may help out.
