Some rental companies do have a black box to track the vehicle. As a former Enteprise employee, I do not know of any vehicle that has a tracking device. They are just trying to limit the amount of miles on the car. The company is owned by one guy but their cars are divided among business groups that do not cooperate with each other. Therefore, each group owns their own cars. If the car breaks down a long ways away then they have to get it back and send out a driver to get it back and is crazy expensive. If you want to risk it go for it just know if their are any mechanical issues you will be reponsible for the long tow. As far as the insurance goes, if you are crazy enough to purchase the “protection” it would void the contract if you were to travel outside the states they have written on the contract. You best bet is to play the low ball rate from Enterprise off other car companies and use that to get them to allow the cross country trip. They do not want to loose the deal. Good luck.

Supposedly there is a black box on some rentals. I`ve heard about a case where someone was charged an extra fee for speeding.

They probably will not bother to track the car. However, I wouldn’t recommend you take the car outside of the agreed upon limits as their insurance will not cover you in the event of an accident or breakdown. Be “up front” with the rental agency and tell them that you’re planning on a cross country trip.
