Review: After reading reviews of gps units for about a month I decided to by the Mio M401. I am happy with it after testing it out for the past month. It as all units from all brands has it’s + and -’s.
First the negatives. It has my home address wrong. No big deal because I just save it as home and it will take me to my door. Since we all know where we live this is not a problem.
Second, because it is off by a block or two in it’s street numbers you’ll have to check for a number on a passing house to get to the door. It will always get you to the street. In towns it’s no big deal but at night or in the country it could cause a problem. Only once did it tell me to take a wrong turn when I purposely missed a turn to check it’s re-routing. I tried it’s re-routing about 20 times and all were perfect except that one time. That’s all I found for the negitive.
Now what I like.
1. Voice is load enough even turned down about 1/3 from max.
2. Other then above issues it always gets you where your going.
3. I love the NavPix feature. Just go on the program that came with the unit, download a geotagged picture to where your going, click on the picture then the routing arrow and your set. I found a picture of my favorite lake about 13 miles from my house, downloaded it and clicked it to set up my route, no typing of an address is needed and it took me right to the parking lot where the picture was taken. This is great if your going somewhere popular like the Baseball Hall of Fame, Grand Canyon etc. Click and go.
4. I tried out the poi’s for my area and while at the lake typed in the town next to where I live to find my gas station. It’s a Turkey Hill but I never knew the name of it before. It’s not listed as Turkey Hill. It was listed though, I clicked the poi and it took me right to the gas station entrance.
5. I’m glad it doesn’t have bluetooth or a picture viewer or a mp3 player. I don’t need these things.
6. It picks up sattellites guickly most of the time.
7. Price. For less then $90 it’s a very good deal if you can get by the address problem. You won’t get lost with it especially with NavPix.
8. I would have given it 5 stars if not for the incorrect addresses but all in all I like this Mio.
9. Unlike other gps’s from other manufactures of all the reviews I’ve read of Mio gps units I never read a review where they said the unit locked up or didn’t start or keep restarting. I liked that fact. There’s nothing worse then setting your course, being on the road and the unit dies. Reviews of other manufactures gps’s seem to list those things alot.
Finally, all in all I am very happy with this Mio. It’s not perfect but none are. You can spend $80 more for another brand and get no better results on the road.
