How do police track a cell phone?
I ask this because a friend was attacked, and robbed. The attacker(s) had taken his cell phone. Is there a way to track the cell phone assuming he didn’t have any GPS services or anything like that? Also considering the police would track it so they would have any resource available. Is there there anything a person could do to modify the cell phone so it can’t be tracked?
Any knowlege on tracking cell phones would be appreciated.
Thanks,

Everytime you use a cell phone it has go to through the carrier tower. They use tower in a 4 mile radius so they might not be able to tract it down unless they used it. Or if they do it might just be the general area.

You can obtain a general location by seeing which repeater is transmitting the signal, or by triangulation withing 3 different towers. The phone has to be in use for this to work.

CGIV76 is correct.
Cell phone triangulation works very much like GPS trilateration. In fact, there is progression in the field to incorporate the two in location.
A person CAN be located via triangulation with cell towers….and you don’t even need to be on the phone at the time. The phone sends out a regular ‘ping’ to nearby towers that allow it to know where it is at any given time.
