Why do the mobile phone networks not offer lost phone tracking services?
They have the ability to triangulate the position as independent companies do like www.traceamobile.co.uk and www.mobilelocators.com do? Surely this would be really useful or do they want people to lose their mobile and buy another one!

You just answered your own question lol! Carriers know that more phones are reported for being stolen/lost more than any other reason. They would surely lose out on the $ if they allowed cell phones to be tracked when this happens.

Although I totally support the notion that these companies are out to make that extra dollar….
Let’s look at this rationally. What you’re really talking about is GPS. An established technology that isn’t really that expensive.
Imagine if there was a number you called and they told you where your phone was. Now multiply that phone call by the BILLIONS of people in the world that own cellphones. You would need an entire nation or two just to take the phone calls.
Then the next argument would be that there wouldn’t have to be a phone center – just a website. Same deal. Billions of people logging into a site just to find out that there phone is “in the vicinity of” their home. It’s not like the technology can tell you it’s between your couch cushions!
