GPS CAR TRACKING SYSTEM?
My father owns a used automobile dealership. He recently bought a GPS tracking device off Ebay relatively cheap. The intent is to install GPS systems in the more costly automobiles we sell so that if people skip town or move we have a way to locate the automobile for repossession. My question is how do units like this work? From my understanding you have to purchase a SIM card and install it in this thing. Then from there you can send a SMS text message to the SIM card and it will respond with Latitude and Longitude of the unit.
Neither one of us really comprehend absolutely how this works. Where we could get our hands on a SIM card or if there is a way to get one without a monthly fee or anything like that.
Also is there a GPS tracking unit we could purchase that would not need a SIM card that we could just track on the web or something? We do not really need anything fancy and would like something with no monthly fee. It’s likely that we had never have to use it but if someone takes off with a $10,000 automobile we had like to be able to track it down.
Any suggestions?

You might check in to SPOT. Its one I just became aware of recently. There is a “tracking option” which causes it to report its position. No other device is needed.

Then there is the Live Track units but they do have a fee of $39.95/mo but no contract and no sim or phone connection is used.
